Static vs dynamic QR codes: what’s the difference?

One stores your content in the pattern, the other sends people through a redirect. When each one makes sense.

Every QR code is just text written as a pattern of squares. The difference between static and dynamic codes is which text goes into the pattern.

Static codes

A static code contains your content directly: the web address, the Wi-Fi details or the contact card. Nothing sits between the code and the destination.

  • They never expire and don’t depend on any company staying in business.
  • They work offline for content like Wi-Fi, text and contact cards.
  • You can’t change the content after printing: a new link means a new code.

Dynamic codes

A dynamic code contains a short address on a redirect service. When someone scans it, the service forwards them to the destination you set in your account.

  • You can change the destination after printing.
  • The service can count scans.
  • The code stops working if the service shuts down or your subscription ends.

Which one should you use?

For most uses, a static code pointing to a page you control is the simplest option. If your menu or offer changes, update that page and the printed code keeps working.

QR Studio makes static codes only. They are free to create and download, and they keep working whether or not you come back to this site.
